A Conservative Government may not be all bad news for Public Sector Communications

Alex Aiken, Director of Communications  at City of Westminster Council, made some very pertinent points at last night’s PRCA Public Sector Group meeting. Among many others, a key point was that the prospective new Conservative government will look closely at public sector communications and introduce new criteria so that marketing and PR spend will only be sanctioned if the relevant department can quantify, and demonstrate, behavioural change as a result. This will certainly raise the bar in public sector communications, and inevitably a lot of discretionary spend will disappear.

However, it’s not all bad news. With a greater focus on achieving tangible results, effective communications teams will be able to demonstrate their worth to the organisation and show that investment in communicating isn’t an optional extra, but is core to any organisation meeting its objectives.
