23rd December – Proffreading is improtant

It’s always a good idea to make sure your work – be it copy or design – is seen by at least one other colleague before it gets sent off to the client of the printer.

That way these sorts of highly-embarrassing errors can be cut out: http://www.buzzfeed.com/patricksmith/layout-disasters-from-2013-that-will-make-you-wince?utm_campaign=socialflow&utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=buzzfeed

What these mistakes all have in common is you can see how they have all happened; a combination of deadline pressures and misfortune. It’s our job to make sure these typos never make it to print.

22nd December – Forward thinking

Further to yesterday’s top PR tip, here’s another non-traditional press release. This block of chocolate USB stick (photo above) contains a press release promoting the release of the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory motion picture remake.

Not only is this idea really clever, it shows a high level of forethought. It’s one thing having the idea, but giving yourself enough time to realise the idea is the most crucial part.

19th December: Watch out for style over substance

As a full service PR and Marketing agency, Quantum offers a broad range of graphic design services through its in-house studio department.

Our team creates designs for leaflets, exhibition boards, newsletters and websites, among other projects.

And they abide by a number of golden rules of design, the first being the Chocolate Teapot rule.

This adage implores the designer to remember the primary function of the piece they are working on at the outset. A concept – however eye-catching and technically magnificent – will not succeed if it doesn’t match the project brief.

Which explains the Chocolate Teapot.

10th December: Carpe diem

The best PR successes are often the result of a piece of quick-thinking, responsive brilliance. It’s all about seizing the opportunity, making the most out of every situation.

The Sandals team enjoyed worldwide coverage for their moment of PR excellence, which came in response to public complaints made by former glamour model and equine enthusiast Jordan.

Rather than issue a statement simply countering her claims, they unleashed this withering comment: http://www.mummybarrow.com/sandals-resorts-and-katie-price-a-pr-win/

One nil Sandals.

6th December: Get organised

Fantastic organisational and communication skills are a must in the multiple plate-spinning world of public relations.

Consider, if you will, the humble press release, which must go through many stages before it is issued to interested parties. These stages include research, interviewing, copy drafting, internal checking, amending, client approval and further amends as required.

When you extrapolate this process across the wide range of services Quantum provides and the number of clients we provide them to, it is easy to see how the occasional task might get lost or forgotten in the midst of a busy working week.

To ensure this doesn’t happen, Quantum PR employs a To Do list system and takes great care to keep clear lines of communication – both internally and externally – at all times. Post It Notes also help keep order in the Quantum office. They’re also a lot of fun: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZtxHOfmhH4

5th December: A word about apostrophes

Today’s advice is to become an apostrophe lover. Understand, appreciate and use the apostrophe correctly at all times. Your clients might not acknowledge this great ability – but believe us, if you fail you’ll be told about it. Make no mistake; it’s your job to get this (and all other grammar) right. It’s just one of the things you’re paid for.

If grammar is your weak spot, get yourself into Waterstones (no apostrophe now required, unlike Sainsbury’s) and teach yourself.

Best to avoid embarrassing situations like this: http://www.pinterest.com/pin/358739926539368925/

Countdown to Christmas

It’s the 1st of December and the Quantum team is focused on finding the best online Advent calendar or competition possible (please let us know your favourites via the comment box below; we’d hate to miss a bit of free fun).

This quest got us thinking: what could we offer the online world over the Advent period?

Someone suggested virtual Christmas puddings – but they left us a bit cold. Then we considered a cutesy animation featuring woodland creatures, but Mr Lewis and his mates got in first.

Thwarted, we took a step back from the cliff face of edgy creativity and remembered our online mantra: “Posts must be useful, interesting, engaging or downright amusing to get traction.”

And so the Quantum PR Advent Calendar was born, featuring tips and advice from the expert PR, marketing and design team here at Quantum Towers. Uploaded everyday via Twitter and the Quantum blog between 1st and 24th December, we’ll be sharing our PR secrets with you.

We hope you find our Advent offering useful and wish you all a very merry December.

1st December: Proof read. Proof read. And then proof read again.

Great PRs need superb attention to detail. Whether you’re copywriting or checking marketing materials, a single typo can destroy your credibility. Mitt Romney’s PR machine learned this lesson the hard way during the 2012 Presidential campaign, releasing this official campaign poster in a bid to drum up support for their candidate: http://www.writingit.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Mitt-Romney-typo-002.jpg

Of course, Mitt subsequently lost the election to Barack Obama. A direct result of this gaffe? Well, at the very least it can’t have helped the Republican nominee’s Presidential push.

Even the smallest typographical, statistical or factual errors can damage credibility and reputation; something that takes years to build up but can be lost in an instant.
