Hi Charlie
I think we're already seeing this. I've noticed a change in budgets and in evaluation criteria over the last 12 months regarding public sector spend. As you say, this isn't a bad thing - it just helps to reinforce our worth!

Charlie. Couldn't agree with you more.

When the chips are down for the economy and government in general, it's easy to look for scapegoats. The easiest targets are often the banks (for obvious reasons), politicians and PR / comms professionals.

In tough times when difficult decisions have to made, it is imperative that clear internal and external communications are delivered effectively and to the right audiences.

If executed badly, messages can easily be mangled by the ever-hungry media and corporate reputations can be damaged irreparably. That’s when PR comes into its own.

If the banks aren't sensitive to public opinion they may well find themselves becoming a major issue in the forthcoming election. The last thing they would want is for Brown and Cameron to try and out-do each other over how much red tape they will introduce to stifle the banks' ability to award their own bonus levels - as is already happening in the States.
I imagine that the Banks are getting some communications advice on how best to manage the situation - and if they're sensible they will heed it.

I stumbled across an article in the Evening Star online which reminded me of your blog article. It shows Suffolk County Council proactively communicating its good work during the snowy weather.

Councillor Jeremy Pembroke was quoted as saying:

“I really want to take this opportunity to thank everyone, particularly those on the front line and those that support the front line, for the wonderful job they have all done during this very cold spell.”

“Whether it be the gritting teams who have kept our roads opened and our county running, whether it be all those who have made unscheduled visits to our customers, to ensure that they are well and safe, irrespective of whether they were at home or in residential care. There will be others who have gone that extra mile to ensure our services have been delivered.”

“To everyone, please accept my heartfelt thanks on behalf of all elected members.”
